Arts & Culture: In the Community

Bletchingley Community Choir

Established in February 2011, Bletchingley Community Choir is a contemporary choir for children and adults based at St Mary’s School, Bletchingley.

It has a current membership of 30 with members from Bletchingley and the surrounding areas.

It is led by Anna Tabbush, BMus (Hons), a Surrey based choral director, arranger and singer. She has now established five community choirs and a successful singing festival, Singfest.

An informal, vivacious conducting style makes rehearsal inclusive and enjoyable to all from first-time singers to professionals.

The choir is part of a Surrey wide initiative called Singing Surrey which has been developed by Arts Partnership Surrey. Singing Surrey hopes to celebrate singing and encourage more people to actively take part in singing. Arts Partnership Surrey is working with the University of Sussex to monitor the positive effects singing can have on participants’ physical and mental wellbeing.

Bletchingley Community Choir meets every Tuesday evening during termtime from 7.15-9.15pm, priced at only £3 per week.

Live and Direct

Live and Direct is a programme of weekly rock and pop music workshops for teenagers aged 11-15 years. These sessions take place at The Orpheus Centre in Godstone, who provide a fantastic venue, instruments and recording equipment for the young people taking part. The project is funded through Youth Music Foundation and supported by Tandridge Trust, Surrey County Council, Rhythmix and importantly Surrey Youth Development Services who manage the weekly sessions. Over 60 young people have now been involved with this project.

The young people have now organised themselves into several bands and have performed at local venues including The Barn Theatre, Euphonic music festival, Celebrating Surrey and The Arc. Evaluation of this project demonstrates how it has had a positive effect in developing self-esteem amongst the young people involved. We can offer Arts Award for all young people who become involved in the project. For more information email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
